During the contiuned efforts of integration or, as the process to integrate public schools continues to evolve, the hatred, racism, double standards and ugly mental and social atrocities did not subside. Students of color were still exposed to double standards. There was no rubric to measure the slightest change.
Dr. Weathers takes the reader on a journey with an individual who bobbed and weaved through such exposures while soliciting and receiving support along the way. He cleverly dimonstrates how mentorship, love and support can be very valuable during the development states of human life. Such guidance is needed to ensure tha type of exposure does not score a goal or place a "W" in the win column for the game of ... oppression... nor be allowed to be a hidrance or distraction from the purpose of education.
As tough as the path may seem, the writing surely delotes it would have been even rockier without the pioneers plishing the stones. Dr. Weathers acknowledges throughout this journey the value of having and partnering with mentors who encouraged, supported and kept him propped when he was leaning.
He advises, Accept and use the tools offerred by those who have come before you to help navigate your paths of development. When it comes to the game of life... remember, it is not where you start, but where you finish!
